Welcome to Newcastle Castle

Open 7-days per week, visit our family-friendly historic attraction to reveal the story of how Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and to walk in the steps of the people who lived and died in the shadow of Newcastle Castle. A great visit no matter the weather, you can easily reach us by public transport or car.

During these exceptional times, the health and safety of our visitors and staff is our number one priority. We have therefore closed our doors temporarily until 30th June. This will be under review in June. Please check our website for updates.

In the meantime, you can make a donation to support the great work of Newcastle Castle and find out more here.

Steeped in history this imposing Norman fortress, in the center of Newcastle Upon Tyne, is a rugged reminder of northern England's turbulent history. This was no baron's stately home. Newcastle Castle is a grim reminder of royal authority where armies gathered, and criminals were imprisoned and executed. It is where the story of Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and has the most commanding views over the city and the River Tyne.

For more information on days that we will be closed to the public, please visit our Closure Days page here.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
