Newcastle Castle’s medieval Castle Keep and Black Gate are two of the North East’s most important and historic buildings. They are Where the Story of Newcastle Began.

We attract over 35,000 paying visitors per year.

There is a very active learning offer for schools. It is common to have at least one school group in 4 days out of 5 during term-time weekdays.

The heritage attraction offers intimate, novel and unique spaces that can be used for all sorts of events from weddings to corporate dinners, film nights to theatrical performances.

The Castle’s roof has stunning and commanding panoramic views over Newcastle and the River Tyne making it a must for selfies and a common spot for our venue hire clients to wow their guests.

Front-of-House Castle Team Members

We are currently looking for variable hours, Front-of-House Castle Team members to join our great team at Newcastle Castle. Day to day responsibilities will include ensuring that the site is ready to open, welcoming visitors to the site, responding courteously and appropriately to visitor enquiries and feedback, taking money as required for both admissions and retail sales, closing down and setting up and cleaning down events as required, ensuring complete visitor satisfaction.

Hours/Wage

  • Variable

  • £11.51 per hour

Requirements

  • An outgoing personality with good communication skills.

  • Energetic and committed in providing excellent customer service and experience.

  • Able to work on variable hours across a seven day rota, including evenings, weekends and public holidays.

  • Able to handle money, take payments and process orders using our till system.

  • Please note that attitude and aptitude can be more important than lots of experience as we will provide training.

  • Aged 18 and over

Main Responsibilities

  • Playing your part in supporting the general development of the organisation in order to achieve the strategic plan.

  • Welcoming visitors to the site, engaging and responding courteously and appropriately to visitor enquiries and feedback.

  • Follow policies and procedures as required.

  • Willingness to undertake training to enable you to complete daily duties, ad-hoc jobs and ensure site operations safety, security and cleanliness.

  • Diligently and accurately carry out all cash handling operations.

  • Play your part to ensure that all events, hires, weddings, are set up and ready for clients.

  • Provide excellent customer service, and maintain a positive, professional attitude, and working relationship, with all other employees and volunteers.

Preference will be given to applicants with an interest in the site’s heritage and a strong ability to engage with members of the public . Due to the nature of the venue, there are very steep steps. Lone working is a part of daily duties.

Events Team Volunteers

Join our Events Team Volunteers if you want to get involved with delivering a fantastic range of exciting after hours cultural events in the atmospheric surroundings of Newcastle Castle!

We’ve done talks, film nights, theatrical performances, art installations, guided tours, workshops, virtual autopsies(!) and much more. You will help out with the setup and takedown of events as well as welcoming our guests to the Castle and helping out during the events themselves.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to work in events, but also for anyone who just wants to see some amazing shows for free in return for helping out.

Learning Team Volunteers

Join our Learning Team Volunteers if you want to engage and inspire children and young people with their heritage through a range of guided tours and educational workshops, all while working with a fantastic and dedicated team of friendly people.

We offer a range of curriculum linked school sessions as well as family activities in the school holidays, all delivered by our Learning Team. This is a great opportunity for people who want experience of teaching, public speaking or leading groups, as well as for retired teachers or others passionate about history to help educate the next generation.

Living History Team Volunteers

Join our Living History Team Volunteers if you want to get dressed up and hands-on with history, engaging a wide variety of audiences with historical storytelling and demonstrations.

The Newcastle Array is the name for our “in-house” re-enactors, who research and educate the public about the lives of the people of Newcastle in the 1300s, when Newcastle was on the front lines of a war between England and Scotland. At the same time it growing into the fourth richest merchant town in England, with links to Italy, Estonia and further afield. Our Living History Volunteers aren’t all experts, but they are passionate about the history of the area and work hard to bring it to life for our visitors.
