Lots Of History

‘The staff are so lovely, the photo opportunities are great, there's lots of history, which I love, and a nice gift shop. Close to the train station + next to the Cathedral. Interesting laminated notes dotted about with facts etc.’

Great tour from George!

‘We really enjoyed our visit to the castle. Our guide George really made the tour and was funny and informative! The views of the city from the top were great. Would highly recommend the tour, especially if visiting the city for the first time.’

Hidden gem in plain view.

‘Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the New Castle of Newcastle. It’s one of those little places that you pass by so often, and never stop. I’m glad I DID stop this time; so much to see and learn about the history of Newcastle.’

‘Absolutely welcoming. Brought a full class of 5/6 year olds here and they Absolutely loved it. The stairs are a bit steep however the view at the top is beautiful! And yes the 30 metre well is still being talked about. Lovely historic place to visit. You can park round the corner at the courts pay and display to the left just past the castle before the bridge. Or jump on train or bus it'll drop you right outside the castle itself.’

‘It's bigger on the inside! Fascinating, mostly all original, although the current roof is Victorian. Full of twisty stairways and little chambers to explore, with signage explaining various aspects. You can walk around on the roof and get great views of the city. Because it is original, it is not accessible for wheelchairs or walkers. Only toilet available is in the Black Tower, where the ticket office is also located. There's an original toilet on view in the castle, though!’

“Sounds daft doesn't it but I never realised Newcastle had a castle. I mean the word is right there in the name. But talk about Newcastle and you probably talk about the bridges over the Tyne and St James Park.
The castle is right in the middle of the city at one of its highest points and the place grew up around it. The Keep is wonderfully preserved and is replete with history which is wonderfully explained by the informative displays. However, I opted for the audio guide- which is accessed via your device - and found it really enhanced my visit. The Barbican gatehouse (the Black Gate) can also be visited and this houses an exhibition gallery and gift shop
When you're visiting you must climb the stairs to the ramparts which commands awesome views around Newcastle
